Gadsden Elementary History
Gadsden Elementary is located in the lower part of Richland County in South Carolina. The school is approximately seventeen mile southeast of Columbia, South Carolina, and is named for the community which it serves. Gadsden, South Carolina, was the sight of the first railroad station in the lower part of Richland County and named in honor of James Gadsden of Louisville, Cincinnati and Charleston Railroad.
Historical data indicates that the first school in the Gadsden community was Weston High School which contained grades one through twelve. The present Gadsden Elementary School is the out growth of three small one teacher schools - Pine Bluff, Red Hill, and Bluff. The union of these three schools was authorized by Act of the Richland County Board of Education in a regular meeting in October 1924. The school was built on four acres of land deeded to the county by Dr. C. L. Adams. The first school was constructed with used material and lumber from Fort Jackson (Camp Jackson).
The old Gadsden Elementary was torn down in 1953, and the first phase of the structure began. The Administration Wing was completed in 1953 by funds made available from the south Carolina Education Finance Commission. The wing contained ten classrooms, a first Aid lounge combination Room, Two offices, Cafetorium, Kitchen, and three storage rooms. in 1962, due to rapid growth in the area, a second wing was completed. This wing contained six classrooms and a library and provided instructional space for grades five, six, and seven. Gadsden elementary is currently located on a 34.24 acre site. It serves children in Child Development (4 year old) to fifth grade.
