Beverly Cleary
Beverly Cleary was born in McMinnville, Oregon on April 12, 1916. Her town was so small, it didn't even have a library until her mother arranged to have books in a room above a bank. Beverly longed to write books about children she knew and funny stories about her neighborhood. Some of her famous characters are: Ramona Quimby, Henry Huggins, and Ellen Tebbits. Mrs. Cleary has won many awards for her writing: 2003 National Medal of Art from the National Endowment of the Arts, 1984 John Newbery Medal, 1978 and 1982 Newbery Honor Books, 1975 Laura Ingalls Wilder Award, the Catholic Library Association's 1980 Regina Medal, and the University of Southern Mississippi's 1982 Silver Medallion, and also the 1984 United States author nominee for the Hans Christian Andersen Award. She has written more than 40 novels.
